Guitar F/X Licks - Tuesday - Week 5

Multi-effects units became popular after guitarists had been stringing their stomp boxes on the floors of the stage and studio for over twenty years. Several of the most used effects were included in one convenient unit. While some, like Ibanez, MXR, Boss and DOD, offered a wide array of processors in a single package and pedalboards, others were dedicated to the combining of two or three specific sought-after sounds. Case in point is the unique Jimi Hendrix Octave Fuzz made by Jim Dunlop. This box combines the fuzz with a parallel high octave, simulating Hendrix's signature use of a Fuzz Face with an Octavia.

Today's lick demonstrates the sound of this multi-effect. Note that the guitar is tuned down one half step for autenticity. The phrase is an aggressive blues-rock line in the E minor pentatonic scale (E-G-A-B-D) employs a quick flurry of notes to set up a series of sobbing string bends. The lick was played on a Fender Stevie Ray Vaughan Strat and the Dunlop Octave Fuzz plugged into a Soldano SLO-100 head and a vintage Marshall 4x12 cabinet.
