Guitar F/X Licks - Wednesday - Week 4 |
In the mid-to-late 1960s guitarists in search of new and unique tones began mating their axes with Leslie rotating speaker cabinets. Leslies were originally used by electronic organists to impart a swirling Doppler effect to the sound-but in the age of rock it became a popular guitarist's tool. Early examples include Eric Clapton with Cream and George Harrison with the Beatles. The Leslie effect was also employed by Joe Perry of Aerosmith, David Gilmour with Pink Floyd and Stevie Ray Vaughan, who achieved the sound with a Fender Vibratone unit. Today many manufacturers make Leslie-type boxes and it is a standard effects processor. Today's lick features the medium-fast vibrato typical of the Leslie sound. The phrase features a soulful blues-based melody in the D minor pentatonic scale (D-F-G-A-C) decorated with string bends and hammered double stops. This lick was played on a Gibson Les Paul Standard and a Dunlop Rotovibe pedal plugged into a Soldano SLO-100 amp.
