Guitar F/X Licks - Friday - Week 3 |
Today's wah-wah lick is a popular R&B figure which has been heard in countless variations in literally hundreds of funk and pop records. The basic rhythm style is closely associated with the great Ray Parker Jr., a mainstay of the 1970s-1980s funk and studio scene. In this style the frethand alternates between fretting pitches and muting strings. The approach in today's lick involves a combination of the rocked-wah technique with muted strings (see Thursday's lick) and an articulated melody line. Here the wah-wah pedal action is timed to emphasize higher frequencies on the melody notes (on downbeats) and darken the lower-register muted strings (on upbeats).
