The wah-wah pedal is sometimes used for purely percussive guitar effects. Notable examples include the intro of Jimi Hendrix's (and Stevie Ray Vaughan's) "Voodoo Chile," and of course the rhythm figure in "Shaft." This sound became emblematic in the 1970s, and emblazoned many a pop and funk record during the period. In this application the most common approach consists of rocking the pedal in time with the basic pulse of a song, but muting the strings to deaden any actual pitches. Such is the case in today's lick. The strings in this example are muted with the frethand while strumming a straight 16-note rhythm with the pickhand. The pedal's throw then is timed to create and emphasize rhythmic accents in the pattern. This style of playing is often referred to as "scratchy wah," transforms the electric guitar into a percussion instrument and is very effective in coloring a funky groove.
