A classic distortion sound was exemplified by Stevie Ray Vaughan's brand of supercharged Texas blues. Stevie was a devotee of the Ibanez TS-808 Tube Screamer (he also used the later Ibanez TS-9 model) stompbox tone. More than a fuzz box, the Tube Screamer added a very natural overdrive to the overall tone and was a perfect complement for the semi-clean tube amps he preferred-blackface Fender Super-Reverbs and Vibro-Verbs, Marshalls and Dumbles among them. Click Here for more info on Stevie Ray Vaughan's tone and gear. Today's lick is played on a Fender Stevie Ray Vaughan Stratocaster with heavy strings tuned down a half step, as was Stevie's penchant. The signal path includes a vintage TS-808 plugged into a Soldano SLO-100 head with the "SRV mod" and a 1970 Marshall 4x12 cabinet. The lick is a definitive blues phrase played over a B7-A7-E chord progression in a shuffle feel. The line is based on a blues in E and accordingly uses the E Blues Scale (E-G-A-Bb-B-D), and combines double stops with a characteristic rolling single-note melody.
