Today's lick is an example of the famed Hendrix Fuzz Face sound. Jimi preferred the Dallas-Arbiter Fuzz Face box, which was marketed in England when Hendrix was first gaining notoriety. He generally used it to overdrive the front end (preamp) of his 100-watt Marshall stacks. This lick is a case in point. The sound is typical of the Hendrix signal path: a Fender Stratocaster (bridge pickup) into the Fuzz Face and then a stock, non-master vintage Marshall amp and Marshall cabinet with four 12-inch vintage Celestion speakers. This killing lick is based on the A minor pentatonic scale (A-C-D-E-G) and is played on a guitar tuned down a half step-Hendrix style. The phrase has several familiar bluesy elements indicative of his approach: string bends, repeating riff patterns and hammer ons and pull offs. The wide string bend in bar three is a major third interval (C to E) and is a classic Hendrixism.
