Guitar F/X Licks - Monday - Week 2

This week's guitar effects topic is distortion and fuzz. Generally distortion is achieved in two ways. The first, and more traditional, way is to overdrive an amplifier into distortion by simply turning up the volume control. The second is to produce distortion before the guitar signal is fed into an amplifier with an external device, such as a "fuzz box." An early example of such processing can be heard on the Ventures' track "The 2000 Pound Bee" recorded in 1962. Other important early proponents of fuzz include Jimi Hendrix, who used a Fuzz Face unit, Robby Krieger of the Doors, who favored a Maestro Fuzz Tone, and Jeff Beck in the Yardbirds era, who gravitated to the Solasound Tone Bender pedal.

Today's offering is an early fuzz lick in the vein of "2000 Pound Bee." This lick is based on the A Blues Scale (A-C-D-Eb-E-G), includes characteristic string bends, and is played in the low register. The fuzz-box sound is often used to color phrases in the low end of the guitar where it adds thickness, weight, and tends to smoothen the overall timbre.
