Guitar F/X Licks - Tuesday - Week 1 |
Today's lick is an example of the multiple echo effect. First the musical portion. This is the type of lick played in pop metal of the 1980s. It is in B minor and uses the B Minor Pentatonic Scale (B-D-E-F#-A) exclusively. Note the typical stylistic elements of whammy bar vibrato and diving in the phrase. Now the effect processing. The delay is set for several repeats which gradually decay. This trailing echo result is achieved by adding more recirculation, most commonly called feedback, to the output signal. The delay time for multiple echoes is generally longer than for tight slap-back echo and is adjusted relative to the tempo of a musical passage, in this case a slower groove requiring about 600 milliseconds. The echo level is set at about 25 percent to give the initial note the greatest volume. This lick was played on a Fender Jeff Beck Strat plugged into a Boss DD-2 digital delay box and a Soldano SLO-100 amp with a Marshall 4x12 cabinet.
