Our first lick of the week features the "woman tone." This is an affectionate term coined to describe the thick, mellow neck-pickup sound (usually with the treble rolled way down) of a Gibson humbucking-equipped electric guitar coupled with a powerful, overdriven high-gain amplifier. In England this invariably meant a Gibson Les Paul and a Marshall Super Lead amp. The "woman tone" added much to the singing, sustaining lines of the British blues-rock players' music, and came to influence numerous guitarists, including Guns `N Roses' Slash-listen to the riff of "Sweet Child O' Mine." This lick is played in E over the E-D chord progression indigenous to the Mixolydian Mode. The melody is based on the E Mixolydian Mode (E-F#-G#-A-B-C#-D) and uses C#-D half-step bend throughout the emphasize the significant sixth and seventh tones of the mode.
