Blues/Rock Guitar Instrumentals Today's lick is a classic Texas blues improvised lead phrase. It is played in E and is situated between the 12th and 9th positions on the fretboard. Triplets add a strong rhythmic component to the melody and serve to push the swing feel a little harder. Note the use of a particular uncommon pentatonic (five-note) scale. In this lick the major sixth C# replaces the minor seventh D. The resulting scale is a new hybrid form which in E would be spelled E-G-A-B-C#. This reconfigured pentatonic scale has its own unique "personality," and yields the diminished arpeggio (C#-E-G) heard throughout the lick as well as the emphasized tritones C# and G. The emphasis on the sixth interval and its blues-oriented use has its origins in 1940s swing music (see the first two licks of August 2000), and has been favored by the great Texas blues guitarist Albert Collins as a sonic trademark.
