Blues/Rock Guitar Instrumentals Our offering for Tuesday is a Texas blues break lick. Played over a stop-time rhythm pattern, it is in E and makes use of numerous position shifts. Note the use of E9 and E11 chords played in the opening triplet-based fanfare riff. These types of voicings have their origin in jazz and R&B rhythm figures. A highlight of the lick is the slurred sequence of parallel sixth intervals in the last two bars. This sequence begins in the 12th position and concludes in the first position, covering an octave's distance on the fingerboard. The sixths outline the E Mixolydian Mode (E-F#-G#-A-B-C#-D). Note the use of G natural and G sharp in this portion of the lick. The free mixing of minor and major thirds is typical of blues melody, and is a significant feature of this lick.
