Golden Age of Guitar Instrumentals - Monday - Week 5 |
Blues/Rock Guitar Instrumentals Today's lick is a classic blues instrumental line. It is played in E and situated in the first position, as if around an open E chord. The lick's open strings are an important textural element as are the slippery slurs heard throughout. The melody is based on the E Major Pentatonic Scale (E-F#-G#-B-C#). A blues-approved mix of the E Major Pentatonic and the E Blues Scale (E-G-A-Bb-B-D) is found in the final measure. The swinging shuffle feel and the consistent use of triplet rhythms in the lick are characteristic of the modern Texas blues style popularized by Freddy King.
