Surf Guitar Instrumentals Rhythm & Blues (R&B) contributed much to the instrumental rock style. Many of the grooves and riffs heard in tunes by Ray Charles, Little Richard, Ike Turner and others were adapted to fit the rock genre generally and its guitar instrumental offspring specifically. Today's lick is just such a figure. It is another example of the borrowing and mutating of musical elements from varied styles in instrumental rock. This lick is a groove-oriented melody which is used as a riff (repeated figure) in the music. The line is made from the A Minor Pentatonic Scale in the standard "box position" at the fifth fret. Note the use of simple syncopation to add a funky conclusion to the lick. In the R&B genre this melody would most likely be played over a 12-bar blues progression or a vamp. Here it is transplanted and played over an A-G-F-E progression for a colorful result.
