Golden Age of Guitar Instrumentals - Thursday - Week 3 |
Surf Guitar Instrumentals Instrumental rock, and virtually all other forms of rock, drew heavily from the blues guitar lexicon. In the 1960s, when rock `n' roll, blues, pop and country were blended by instrumental combos like The Ventures, the Astronauts and the Rumblers, many of the solo or break licks within the genre were borrowed blues licks. Today's lick is a case in point. This melody is in the A Minor Pentatonic Scale (A-C-D-E-G) in the standard "box" position at the fifth fret. The lick is distinguished by characteristic string bends on the third and second strings. These are physically and sonically similar to bends used by blues guitarists like T-Bone Walker and B. B. King, however, in the instrumental rock style of the early 1960s, are usually arranged to be simpler and not as improvisatory in application. Rather bends are often found as embellishing elements in structured and song-like instrumental phrases. This grafting of blues onto the rock `n' roll tree was an important agent in the growth and development of the guitar instrumental genre.
