Our third
lick is a textbook
country-rock line in
standard tuning
articulated with a flat
pick. Licks like this
created a template for
future stylists in the
genre. Crank the gain
back up for this passage
to achieve a singing,
smooth quality and
select both humbuckers.
The lick is played over
a repeated E to A chord
vamp. Here, Duane used
the E major pentatonic
scale as the melodic
framework and works the
A note strategically
into the patterns. Also
notable are the wide
string bend in bar two
and the repeated
riff-like patterns in
bar three. The lick
further demonstrates
Duane's use of the
stock E major pentatonic
box at the 9th position
and the extension into
the related 12th
position (in bar four).
