70s Funk Blast - Friday - Week 2

Brothers Johnson style
George (guitar) and Louis (bass) Johnson often mixed playing counter rhythms and unison lines to create some of the funkiest dance grooves in the '70s.

Today's lick is based on the E Mixolydian mode pattern (E, F#, G#, A, B, C#, D). The lick starts by sliding from the Eb9 to E9 chord and strumming a rhythmic pattern on the E9. You continue by playing the 5th and 7th frets on the 5th string and then hammering from the 5th to 6th frets on the 4th string. The note on the 5th fret/4th string is actually a b3 (minor 3) compared to the E Mixolydian, but fits nicely into this lick as a transitional type note. The lick ends by playing the major 3rd, perfect 4th and perfect 5th intervals using the 4th finger anchored on the root note (E) on the 9th fret/3rd string. Try playing to the unison bass line on looping jam track.
