70s Funk Blast - Thursday - Week 2 |
Brothers Johnson style George (guitar) and Louis (bass) Johnson often mixed playing counter rhythms and unison lines to create some of the funkiest dance grooves in the '70s.
Today's lick is based on the E Mixolydian mode pattern (E, F#, G#, A, B, C#, D). The lick starts with an octave pattern using your 1st and 4th fingers starting on the 7th fret/5th string (A) and descending to the 4th and back to 5th frets. You repeat this octave pattern in the second measure and resolve the phrase by playing major 3rd intervals rhythmically on the 5th fret/5th string and 7th fret/5th string. Try playing to the unison bass line on looping jam track.
