70s Funk Blast - Tuesday - Week 1 |
Parliament/Funkadelic style The guitarists for Parliament/Funkadelic would often play a counter rhythm and melody to the bass and drums. The orchestration of these rhythmic patterns produced a powerful percussive effect to the overall sound of the band while leaving space in the music for vocals and the soloists.
Today's lick is based on the E Minor Pentatonic pattern using the 4th, 5th & 6th strings. The lick starts on the open E, then playing a pull-off from the 5th fret to open position and back to the 7th fret on the 5th string (A). The lick continues with a hammer on the 4th string. Notice the subtle muted notes on the open 6th string (E) that you can produce by palm muting using your picking hand. You finish the lick by moving your hand down a whole-step to play notes based on the 3rd to 5th frets.
