This Sly & the Family Stone type lick starts by strumming the lower notes of the A7 barre chord and then immediately picking the higher strings of the chord. Continue this lick by playing the D major chord by barring your 3rd finger on the 7th fret (2nd - 4th strings). The phrase ends by playing the D 9 chord on the 5th fret.
