This Sly & the Family Stone type lick starts by playing the open 5th string (A) and immediately playing notes in the A Min Pentatonic scale on the 4th string. You can recreate the percussive sound of this lick by muting the strings with your picking hand by slightly resting the palm on the strings. End each phrase by playing the A 9 chord on the 12th fret.
