In The Style of Angus Young (AC/DC) part 3
Lesson Sample mp3
Lyle:
In this lesson you're going to learn how to play the Lesson
Sample. It sounds like a song Angus wrote and
recorded but it's just something I made up "in his style" in the key of
B. You'll start off by learning the intro
riff. I've broken it into 2 parts:
Lyle:
Use your thumb and 2 fingers, index and middle of your right hand. I tuck my
pick into my fingers like this:
pick grip
Lyle: Here's the 2nd half of the intro
riff:
Lyle:
Both parts together look like this:

Lyle:
After you have learned the intro riff, try playing along with me using this jam
track:

The next part is 3 power chords:

riff
Lyle:
Try alternating between the intro riff and the power chord riff as you play
along with this jam track which is just drums and bass.

Sisinnio: Can I
use alternate strums?
Lyle: I like all down strokes for power chord
riffs like this.
Lyle: Next is the solo from the Lesson
Sample. Angus uses the minor pentatonic most if
the time when he plays solos. This groove is in the key of B, so the B
minor pentatonic scale is where we'll find the notes to make up a solo
with. Learn these patterns
now:
Lyle:
Use this next jam track as you learn these solo
riffs, it has both rhythm guitar parts in it:

Lyle: You're going to
put all of these riffs together to make a complete
solo. I've broken up the solo in
small little pieces so it's easier to
learn. Here's the first
riff:

2
Lyle:
Notice the heavy, fast vibrato on many of the sustained notes. Very much a
strong technique of Angus.

Lyle:
This next riff is where you change positions on the neck, but you're still in
the B minor pentatonic.

Lyle: And the final riff to make a nice ending
for the solo:

All of these riffs put together look like this:

Here's a video of the whole solo too:

Lyle:
He may not be the fastest guitar player out there, with the most diverse tone,
but he sure knows how to play blues/rock guitar as good as
anyone!
Lyle:
That's all for this lesson.
