Guitarists Who Shaped the 80s - Monday - Week 5 |
In the '80s, Queensryche was one of the bands that dominated the heavy metal scene with their progressive guitar driven songs. Today's lick is reminiscent of their approach to playing heavy metal rhythm riffs. Listen to the riff and notice the sound of every other chord. It has a dissonant sound to it caused by the tri-tone involved. A tri-tone interval is built from the root and b5 played together. Another point to be aware of as you learn this lick is the palm muted open A (5th) string. You'll need to alternate your picking to be able to play the quick, two note, palm muted lick. Watch the video for a better look at this technique.
