Guitarists Who Shaped the 80s - Thursday - Week 2 |
Today's lick takes another look at the style of guitar virtuoso Edward Van Halen. Eddie literally turned the rock guitar world upside down in the '80s. In the example below you will be harmonizing major 3rd and minor 3rd intervals instead of playing chords. An interval is the difference in pitch between two notes where as chords are made up of a minimum of 3 different notes. During the 2nd measure of this lick, you'll play an E major 3rd interval followed by a D major 3rd interval. In the 4th measure you'll play the D major 3rd interval followed by a C# minor 3rd interval. Notice how the minor 3rd interval has a different shape and sound to it compared to the major 3rd.
