Guitarists Who Shaped the 80s - Friday - Week 1 |
Today's lick is a heavy rhythm riff combined with a melodic, almost classical sounding lead during the second half phrase. Every note of this lick, except for the quick pull-off near the middle of the lick, is palm muted. The palm muting technique is used to produce a tight, percussive, staccato effect. Lay the heal of your right hand on the bridge of your guitar, right about where your strings begin so they are slightly muffled by the skin of your hand, then pick the note hard. If you don't hear the note, you might be muting too hard. Another technique you should work on with this lick is alternate picking. Start with a down stroke and follow with an up stroke all the way through to the end of the lick. This technique will help you get a smoother rhythm feel and keep your timing tight.
