Progressive Rock Guitarists - Friday - Week 3 |
Today's example of the Lydian mode is stylistically like that of guitarist Steve Vai. Fast and aggressive and with a slight personality touch at the end of the riff as it hits the very last two notes: the open low E followed by a harmonic E on the first string placing it four octaves higher. The jam track has a two chord progression consisting of D and E. When you have two major chords one whole step apart like this, you can play the Lydian scale over the lower of the two chords. In this case you'll be playing the D Lydian. The D Lydian is the 4th mode in the key of A major. You might even recognize that you're playing an A major scale pattern.
