Progressive Rock Guitarists - Thursday - Week 3 |
Today's Lick Of The Day is based around the A Lydian mode which is the fourth mode of the E major scale. The major scale and the Lydian are almost the same. First, look at the way the major scale is constructed. Major scale formula in steps: whole, whole, half, whole, whole, whole, half. Lydian scale formula in steps: whole, whole, whole, half, whole, whole, half. The Lydian scale is the exact opposite when you compare the two. Even though these scales may sound the same, the big difference lies in the #4th degree in the Lydian. This is the note or degree to be aware of while you're experimenting with improvisation on the Lydian scale as it will have the most impact on emoting the pure essence of the scale. As you play today's lick, you'll find that playing the scale with octaves gives your lick twice the power than if you just played it on a single string.
