Progressive Rock Guitarists - Thursday - Week 1

Today's Lick Of The Day is again over the A7#9 chord, or altered dominant chord. Try this lick to recreate the styles of guitarists Frank Gambale and Jeff Beck. The lick starts off on the root, A, then with a little string skipping, lands on another A note one octave lower. Then it skips another string to hit the 3rd fret of the 5th string before moving back up. It's always good to add a few of these string-skipping licks to your improvisation. It helps create several things like wide intervalic movement and to the listener, makes them wonder where you're going. About half way through the lick, it hits the 6th fret of the second string. That note is the #5th which is outside our normal blues and pentatonic scale. That note, against the A7#9 chord, really gives the lick its color. The riff then ends with a couple of simple, traditional riffs to tie it all together.
