Psychedelic '60s - Miller @ Monterey Pop Festival
The Moby Grape volunteered to be the first band to play on Saturday at the '67 Monterey Pop festival which featured bands like Jimi Hendrix, Otis Redding, Janis Joplin, Booker T & many others. This week will feature some of the first licks played at this historic event.
I used this lick often when I played with the Grape. Peter (Lewis) would often take off on a single chord fingerpicking pattern while Bob (Mosley) pounded on a single string on his bass. This allowed me the freedom to explore and create new patterns without being distracted by chord changes. Today's lick uses the A Minor Blues scale which progressively climbs notes in the scale pattern while jumping back to a key note based either on the 7th fret/5th string or 7th fret/4th string.
