Psychedelic '60s - Miller/Jerry Garcia Jams
Jerry Garcia and I use to jam for hours at sound check before our shows (Moby Grape/Grateful Dead) at the Fillmore (San Francisco, CA). Bill Graham and crew use to play basketball to the beat of our grooves while Jerry and I kept time to the echo of the hall.
Sometimes Jerry Garcia and I never communicated about what to jam, one of us would lead into a groove using a favorite lick we picked up. I picked this lick up from a guy named Jim Clockner who was the first guitar player I ever saw who really dug into the instrument. The lick is based on the G minor pentatonic scale which uses a hammer/pull-off on the 3rd string and then moving to the 4th string where you hammer from the open string. You barre the 3rd and 5th frets to finish the lick. Try playing to the looping jam track while you visualize jammin' with Jerry Garcia and I onstage at the Fillmore.
