Jazz Connection - Tuesday - Week 5 |
Creating altered sounds in improvising is a big deal in jazz. One good scale that does this is the Harmonic Minor scale. Today's lick is a classic jazz line for a minor II-V-I progression in A minor. (Bm7b5-E7-Am7) The licks begins with a Bm7b5 arpeggio followed by an Fmaj7 arpeggio outlining the Bm7b5 chord. The 2nd bar uses the A harmonic minor scale mixed with a few chromatic passing notes. Practice this line over the Jam track which is the same progression. Alternate picking works best for this line. When you reach the Am7, make up your own ideas using a C major or G major scale.
