Jazz Connection - Monday - Week 4

Today's lick is a chord phrase for a E7. It's a melody (top notes of the chords) that uses several E dominant chords and a few altered ones which serve as passing chords. Learn and use this phrase the same as a single-note lick. Although the line is rooted in jazz, I'm demonstrating it in a funk situation. I've included the names of the individual chords, however, the goal is to learn it as a lick as a complete phrase played over E7. The first chord is an good E9 voicing followed by the same chord 1/2 step lower (Eb9) creating a chromatic move to the Bm7. The F9#5 leads into the E9 the same way. The 2nd part of the lick is a classic 4 chord move for E7 which includes the passing Edim7. The final 2 chords are open string types to round out the lick. Play it over the jam track which is a E7 funk vamp. Since most of the chords have only 4 notes, you need to mute the unused strings if you strum with a pick. The lick can also be plucked with with your right-hand fingers.
