One of the reasons jazz players are drawn to the pentatonic scale is that it can be broken into several 4th and 5th intervals. These intervals have become synonymous with many of the "hip and cool" sounds in jazz. Today we actually have two licks which are intervallic pentatonic lines. The first has a four-note pickup followed by fifth and fourth intervals descending to the low E string. Each of these 6 notes are on separate strings presenting a very challenging picking pattern. Use these 6 notes in both directions as a picking and warm-up exercise. The continuation of the lick take you through several more 5th and 4th interval shapes returning you to the top string. The second lick also uses 5th intervals to rapidly cross the fingerboard. The first 4 notes are repeated a second time an octave higher followed by a straight descending A min pentatonic. Alternate picking both licks is a good place to start, however, you might find a few places where sweep picking can work.
