Jazz Connection - Wednesday - Week 2 |
Combining different pentatonic scales can add a lot to solos. Today's "McLaughlin" inspired lick combines all three pentatonics from the key of C major (C, F and G major pentatonics). It uses four-note pentatonic shapes ascending and descending through the key. The lick begins with the first 4 notes of C major pentatonic followed by the same shape in F major beginning on the A string 8th fret. Then shift up a whole step to G pentatonic. Now just repeat the same three shapes an octave higher ending with another C shape on the top 2 strings. Descend the same way back down. Strong alternate picking is the way to go on this one. Start with a downstroke.
