Current Jazz GuitaristsRobben Ford (b. 1951) comes from another highly musical background. His father and his brothers all played various instruments and were rooted in country music and the blues. Robben is equally capable of crossing over from the blues to jazz to rock as his own recordings have shown. On the jazz side of his career, he has worked with Miles Davis, Sadao Watanabe and the Yellowjackets.
Today's lick works on a dominant seventh chord with a raised eleventh. You can play this type of chord as a substitute for an ordinary dominant chord in many situations including the blues. Try this lick over the IV chord the next time you play the 12 bar blues.
