Be-Bop GuitaristsLenny Breau (1941 - '84) was a unique guitarist, merging a country-finger style approach to the bebop language. Tal Farlow, Barney Kessel and his friend/mentor Chet Atkins influenced him. Starting at the early age of seven, Lenny was working professionally with his parents' country & western band by twelve. Lenny was a musician's musician, and made his mark with his sheer originality.
Today's lick is one of Lenny's more classic approaches to playing bebop. Notice the sequence of pull-offs that outline a half-whole diminished sequence over the D7. This is very useful for dominant seventh chords because it is symmetrical, and easy to plug into your own improvisations at any point. More on this in an upcoming live lesson.
