Evolution of Jazz Guitar - Thursday - Week 2 |
Be-Bop GuitaristsPat Martino (b. 1944) was another early starter, thanks to his father who sang and played the guitar as well. He started playing professionally with R&B acts like, Lloyd Price and Willis Jackson. Later, Pat got into organ trios with Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff, Jack McDuff, and Richard "Groove" Holmes. In the early eighties he suffered an aneurysm and effectively lost the ability to play. After years of studying his past recordings, he came back on the scene sounding better than ever.
Today's example is a classic sounding bebop lick that works the lower end of the guitar neck. The chord progression is an altered dominant seventh chord resolving to a minor I chord. Once you get this one under your fingers, you can use it over an up tempo minor blues.
