Surf Guitar Instrumentals Our lick for Tuesday is a simple minor-mode phrase representative of a specific surf melody type. The surf style frequently makes use of exotic, ethnically-based melodies which allude to Middle Eastern and Asian music. Such is the case in this lick, which has a familiar modal sound often heard in surf music. The melody line is based on the E Natural Minor Scale or E Aeolian Mode (E-F#-G-A-B-C-D), and is played in the first position encouraging the strategic use of open strings. The scale of this melody is presented in its hexatonic (six-note) form: E-F#-G-A-B-D, a pattern which splits the difference between pentatonic and diatonic scale forms. The same hexatonic scale has also been used by Carlos Santana, Eric Johnson, and many other imaginative guitarists to color their solos and improvisations. Note that this hexatonic configuration invites the use of the ninth tone, F#, in the melody which adds a distinctive diatonic flavor to an otherwise comparatively bland pentatonic lick.
